is the 81 gs550 engine the same as the 80 gs550 engine? or is there two different engines for both 1980 and 1981? i have a 1980 gs550e and ordered a ss bolt set. what they sent is totaly wrong.

Pretty sure the 80 and 81 engines are the same. The early engine is similar too but has a kick starter, points, and a small port head since it uses VM carbs.Ed

I had the same problem with my 80 gs550. I ordered a set from stainlesscycles.com When it came all the bolts were too short. I called them and they asked how many bolts I had on the signal generator cover. I told them three and they said I had an 81 engine. They sent me out a new set that day and they fit perfectly. If that's who you ordered from give them a call they will take care of you.Comment

Gregg at stainless was great. my fault. the frame has been painted, and the vin tag is useless. my title says 1980. previus owner told me it is an 80. im sure the vin tag said the bike was produced in late 1980. which means its an 81.thanks to all for the help.Comment
