Frame Differences.....
Looks like the state of Virginia may end up winning the title war I am currently having with them. I foolishly bought the 450 without a title, honestly believing we could get one for it. I have access to a 750 frame with a clear title. Will the frame for the 750 be to wide to fit all my 450 running gear? Is there a difference in the frame sizes? Thanks in advance for any help provided!Tags: None

Huge difference in frames.
Not a feasible alternative to swap running gear
Sell it someone in a state that doesn't require titles and buy it back1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
1978 GS 1000 (parts)
1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
2007 DRz 400S
1999 ATK 490ES
1994 DR 350SES

Don't know the answer to your question but it may be possible to cut the VIN out of the 750 frame and weld it in place of the 450 VIN #.... A little fab, blending and paint and the schmoes down at the DMV would never know the difference.

Swapping necks is simple enough to do and may save you a great deal of effort with DMV. Another in a long list of reason I left the Great Commonwealth. There a few really good builders depending on the area youre in. Not knowing where youre located, I cant really offer any names for where you are. But if youre anywhere near Alexandria, R&R cycle is a good place to start.

I love these old bike and I hate it every time one gets parted out. Too many meet this fate because of title problems. I have a 77 GS750 with $400 worth of back fees from the bike not being non oped.
We all need to do the right thing to these bikes to preserve them. Never let the registration go unattended. If the frame is destroyed from a crash and you have the title cut the steering head off and save both.
I have no problem with splicing in a new VIN as 99% the time this has nothing to do with a 30 year old stolen bike. There are only a few choice's in a new ujm today so lets keep these bike around. Dan

You can also find a friend in South Carolina. Here a bill of sale is as good as long as the VIN doesnt ring any bell when a search is done. Then when a new title has been issued, buy it back for the cost of the DMV work and maybe something for that persons time.

BTW did you change the forks on your 80 gs750lx I thought all L's had forks with the tires mounted in front of the forks not the bottom like yours.

Thanks for the info on the frame differences. I have certainly considered purchasing the 750 frame, and swapping VINs. But I can see DMV running me down for a stay at the straight bar hotel......

I'm glad maine doesn't make a point of focing you to have a title. Anything over umm... 15 years I think it is, doesn't require a title. I was thinking about trying to procure one for my bike though. It would be nice to be able to say that I have the title even though don't need it.
