Loose pilot jet plugs

I've got the bowls off to check float heights on my BS32 Mikunis ('81 GS650G) and the plastic pilot jet plugs are loose, a couple so loose they'll fall out when the carbs are righted. Are these vital or can I leave them out? Not sure what they're supposed to do except maybe discourage people from fiddling with the carbs. Or do I have to secure them in the opening somehow?

I think there should be a raised bump in the float bowl to retain these little suckers,they need to be there

By the way, they're not plastic, they're rubber.

That's right, soft, pliable rubber. If yours aren't, maybe it's time to replace them, but they are held in place by the float bowl.

Mine are hard as plastic. Probably why they fall out maybe.

Yeah, they get about as hard as a rock after 20 or 30 years. They are readily available and I think they cost about $2.25 each.....(which is only about $2 more than they're worth).
