Starter Relay

Pretty sure my starter relay is junk. Found one on ebay for $40 with shipping- it's a lot more at any parts supplier.

My question (because I am really cheap) is can I just go to Autozone or somewhere similar and pick up a starter relay of some sorts similar to the one on the bike and have it work fine? Is there some jerry rig system I can come up with that's cheaper and faster than $40 on ebay.

I realize I might have to figure out a mount, etc.

I would buzz from the control terminal to case ground . If you have a 2-3 ohms they it is OK and might be your ground.

By soldering the control wire I was able to completely disassemble an 81 GS750 solenoid and clean the contacts inside (actually reversed the shorting bar).

Worth a check we have has a rash of poor solenoid grounds lately.

By the way any 12V relay would work assuming it is rated at for a few cranking amps (guessing 10 or so) .

Should have supplied more info.

I took the solenoid apart and the contacts were all funky, I think causing arc. I had 12v from battery in to solenoid, and could only get about 1-2v when hitting the button.

So any kind of relay with 12 v and maybe 10-15 amps twin poles should work?

Yeah it will work, I just picked one up from Northern Tool that was for a lawn mower/snow blower. I have also seen them at Oreily Auto Parts stores for $10. You can get a Ford relay at Napa for $26, but it is pretty big.

Yeah, a relay for a lawn tractor will work fine. I've got two or three of those kicking around here, but I haven't had to replace mine yet.

If you want to save money and you have the relay apart, how about just cleaning the contacts up with a points file?

Just make sure you mark which big wire is the one going to the starter and which one is to the battery and don't mix them up or you fry your starter!!

4 screws and desolder the activation coil lead.
Should be able to clean it up jsut like new.

undo the nut and flip the main shorting bar over

I dont think this matters. Just dont swap your engine ground for the starter cable; that could be bad.

PO must have had it apart because as I was taking one of the posts off it was stripping and to make it work I cranked down split the plastic, blah blah blah. Don't have a points file either, so I think I will spring the $10.

That's what I thought. Don't know how I could mix them up... The relay ideally only works when you hit the starter and juice goes in, grounds, and makes the power from the battery hit through to the starter.
