    GS700E Carb Issues!

    Hi All, Any thoughts on this would be good. Bought this GS700E, Californian import, it has older V&H pipe, Std 37.5 pilot jets, mixture screws 3 turns out, 6 position needles on 2nd from top groove (guessing Dynojet) , Slides have been drilled, 112.5 Mikuni main jets (122.5 Std?). Gave petcock & carbs really thorough clean out - runs ok, but think it could be better mid range. Has Std airbox & filter. If it's stood a few days it takes a lot of spinning to get going. I know from reading previous posts that a lot of you guys are very knowledgeable about this. Will do some plug chops when get chance. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers.

    Are you sure the main jets are mikuni?
    1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

      Those settings sound pretty lean. Maybe it was run in higher elevations in CA.

        All jets have square within square. One of the mains has the boxy type numbers on it.

          If stock jets are 122.5 (verified in the carb sticky), you should have about 130 in there with the V&H pipe.
          With the 112.5, it's dangerously lean, even without the pipe.

          Adjustable needles are not stock, but I would expect the clips to be closer to the second from the bottom, not the top.
          Since it's the clip that locates the needle, this raises the needle, richening the mixture.

          If it "takes a lot of spinning to get going", chances are that you might need to check your valve adjustment.
          Hard starting when cold is a classic sign of mis-adjusted valves, especially if they are tight.

            It's common for guys with DJ kits to replace DJ mains with Mikuni mains. 112.5 is way too lean though. 125-130 would be a good choice.

              I always tend to just buy new jets on any bike I purchase from an individual that I don't personally know.

              The numbers on the jets usually mean they are the size indicated, unless "Terrible Tom" has gotten a hold of them with his "adjust a jet drill set."

                I read on here that Dynojet size x 0.9375 = Mikuni jet size. So in DJ kit for GS700E Stage1 DJ118 would equal 110.5 if this is right and Stage 3 DJ134 = 125.6. I have Std airbox so would assume The stage 1 jet to be the right one, 112.5 being closest, but this is smaller than Std jet 122.5 which seems very odd to me.
