    Greetings and Salutations!!

    Hi,

You don't have to split the cases, just don't let the chain fall down into the crankcase. Get a manual from my site and read up on the procedure.

Let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

The cylinder needs to be removed to get at the rear tensioner. Not as involved as splitting the cases...but no trivial repair.

I don't know about other engines than my '82 750 but the rear guide is captured in the cases when you bolt them together
