Stator Pics - Good v. Bad

I've had issues with my charging system. Do these pics look bad? Of course I'm being facetious.

with this photo, the redish material is hard and does not come of with light rubbing. Any ideas what it is and should I remove it?

I'm trying to figure out how to post pics straight to this thread. I normally don't post pics so i'm a little out of sync with it, sorry! Time to use my Morgan i guess

Crapp; I thought I had seen bad stators before . Are you sure nobody tried to cover the stator in some goop for better insultion?

I would not trust that stator as a boat anchor .

Dare I say there is a charging issue? Something is causing this critter to soke; More than likely bad connections that cause the R/R to shunt to much current back to the stator;
That is gonna need fixing or you will get it again.

I installed a honda r/r from an '82 CB450 about 2 weeks ago. I seem to have gone through all of the ground connections according to my wiring diagram anway.

I rode for about 45 minutes last night and the last 10-15mins first my directionals stopped blinking, then my horn would not work but my light stayed on. I'm sure it was very bright though.

I am ordering a new stator from Ricks motorsport. So all i need is a 12 pole stator then for a '79 850? A gasket too. When i put in my order i just want to make sure i have everything i'll need when putting it back together.

According to them the 79-81 G/GL and the 82-83 G/GL use the same stator. They also have the same part number. Is this correct?

I don't think I'll ever understand why guys go with R/Rs that are almost 30 years old when you can get late models units for the same money on Ebay all the time.

Hi Mr. tas850g,

The insulating coating on your stator looks like it has gone through quite a heat treatment. I'll bet the wires under there have their insulation cooked off too. One of my stators had bare wires showing.



Your last picture looks like some of the epoxy has rubbed onto the rotor and made a hard, sticky mess. It probably won't hurt anything but I'd clean it up the best I could.

The '79 GS850 used a 12 pole stator (stock). Later years used the 18 pole stator. They are not interchangeable unless you also change the rotor, they use a different number of magnets.

i'll clean up the epoxy the best i can.

I've read here about the 12 v 18 pole stator. I don't want to change the rotor if i don't have too. When i order the new stator i'll make sure it is a 12 pole.

I'm just confused that the 79-83 have the same part number but if your picture here is the stock stator then in 80 used the 18 pole? I'm just trying to understand it. I over Analyze things sometimes.

I just ordered (and received) a stator from RM Stator for my 1980 GS1000G. It is indeed 18 pole. I talked to the guy on the phone about it when ordering, he said that yes indeed, the '79 GS850G is 12 pole, but the '80 and up GS850G (and 1000G and 1100G) uses the 18 pole.

I'm popping the cover off tonight, we'll see what's in there. The wiring from it appears to be the stock (multi-colored) wires.
