    sprocket changes on GS550E

    what is going to change on my rpm/topspeed/low end to go from a 46 tooth rear to a 43 tooth?

    to clarify.....I'll be removing 3 teeth from the rear.

    I don't know what the OEM front is....

        using these two sources I've sort of figured that the smaller tooth sprocket will give me more top speed......but probably less punch off the start.

        I'm thinking of going with the 49 tooth

          It seems that stock sprockets on your bike are 14-F/48-R. If you go up a tooth in the front it will lower your rpm's at highway speeds but you'll loose some spunk on the low end. You may find yourself downshifting a lot.

            I'm trying to figure the combination for more lower end power.......for some reason this bike has a 46t on the rear and my Katana rear currently has a 43t on the rear......guess I need to look for a 49t for the rear to get the setup I need then if the stock rear was 48t. I'm pretty sure it has the 14t on the front still.....

              I thought the proper ratio was either down 1 on the front or up 3 on the rear.....

              what's a good rule of thumb for changing the gearing a little at a time?

                Sorry if this sounds like scolding but if you would do a search you would find TONS of information on gearing.

                  Hi there Colorodo. You're currently helping me sort through my issues/mistakes in my thread (gas in airbox). I've built stock cars for over 20 years. Gear ratios are done in my sleep. In your case, you have a 14-46. That means you have a 3.2857:1 drive ratio. If you go to a 14-43, you will have a 3.0714:1 drive ratio. By only changing one sprocket, you have changed your drive ratio by about .2:1. If you're looking to get a little closer than that, you have to know what ratio you want and do the math to find out what sprockets are available. For exampe a 15-48 will give you a 3.2.000:1 drive ratio. With this combo, you only changed the drive ratio by .1:1.

                  I hope I haven't complicated the issue more than i needed to, but I try to contribute to people here because of all the help I've gotten.

                  Oh, by the way, just divide your big sprocket by your small one and that's your chain drive ratio. 46/14=3.2857 48/15=3.2000 and so on.......

                    I did a search and was simply trying to figure out what changing ratios does to your rpm, low end power, and top speed.........I wasn't sure if taking teeth way gave me more top end or more bottom end gearing for out of the corner.......
