    GS1000G - starter button dead

Fixed my electrical issue with the lights... now the starter button does nothing.
I have the relay mod but it's not tied into the starter circuit.
I have bypassed the clutch lever switch (yesterday just to be sure it wasn't that). Didn't have time to do much else... Fuses are all good.

Any ideas where to start or to test? Just looking for a heads up.

Can I short the relay like I would with a car to see if the started turns?

Make sure you did not bump the connector under the tank the lead to the starter button. I have bumped to so that it no longer made connection.

Yes, you can short across the large terminals on the solenoid to see if the starter turns. You can even do that with the key OFF.

      check for corrosion

I have an 81 GS750 and the starter button stopped working out of the blue. I took it to the mechanic and he spent over an hour taking apart the starter button and cleaning off corrosion. Now it starts.

So, maybe take it apart and see if the copper has corrosion on it.

I'm no mechanic, but this is what happened to me.

have the same problem with my 750 L

I have taken apart the starter switch and cleaned that, taken apart the clutch disconnect switch and clenaed it and still wont start. I know that the starter is ok b/c I have shorted across the relay. Even bought a new relay but still no working. Thank God for the kick starter!!

If you happen to find the solution please let me know.

BTW when I check my G/Y wire coming in to the relay it has zero voltage when the starter is pressed and key is on. How about you?

I suspect it is simply that one of the plugs I disturbed under the tank is not making proper contact... at least I hope it is. Going to go find out now...

The wire that goes to the solenoid runs right next to the plug under the tank. I bet that's the ticket.

If you're really unlucky, you might have to spend a whole $11 on a garden tractor solenoid at Lowes.

So I tested the solenoid - all works fine.
Got the meter out, checked voltages at different points. Hmm not even the relay is triggering for the ignition. Nothing at the start button etc

Decided before going any further I would check out the fuse box... looks fine.

Decide to check continuity on the fuses.. they look good but... Result, one blown 10amp fuse

That was all it was. I imagine I accidentally moved the blown "looking good" fuse from one spot to another the other day hence the lights magically fixing & the ignition going out..

Also gave me an excuse as the tank was off to raise the needles half a notch (richer), been meaning to try that for nearly a year Test ride tomorrow.
