Carb rebuild kit ????s

Hi I've recently acquired a 78 gs1000 I D number gs1000103381. The Mikuni carbs are full of varnish so I need to rebuild them. I bought a kit off ebay for 78 and 79 gs1000s. The gaskets are the same but the jets seem completely different. Different shaped (not different orifice size) My question I guess is did the factory use a different carb for the early 78 models? Ill try to post a picture. Thanks in advance for any insight. Jim

Carb kits are discouraged around here for the reason you mention; the metal parts they contain sometimes don't match the originals. Standard suggestion here (which you can easily find by doing a search) is to keep the stock Mikuni brass parts intact and replace the O-rings with a kit from cycleorings.com. Replacing the bowl gaskets is also a good idea. To clean the actual carbs it's necessary to fully tear them down and soak the carb bodies in carb dip. Most newbies think they can do a quick spritz out with spray carb cleaner...and when that doesn't work, they have to tear into the carbs again...and again...until they do the job right. Not saying you fall into this catagory, just suggesting you do the job right one time.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents to this. Yes, you CAN clean your carbs with spray carb cleaner, BUT it's more labor intensive than the dip. I myself, took about 4 cans of the extra large gumout carb cleaner and blew threw each carb orifice for a minute or two. Then I boiled it in lemon juice ( I kid you not , however I did not boil the brass mikuni parts) then I boiled it in water.
Slapped it together with new allen bolts, o rings, and bowl gasket, and she runs perfect.

Keep in mind, if you can get the dip, use it. I couldn't get any locally for less than $90, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy a $90 ballon of carb cleaner that I'm probably only going to use this once.

Another option is a nice ultrasonic cleaner. I saw one at my local hardware store for $50, looks like it fits two carbs at a time.

I boiled out some carbs in lemon juice and it got a good deal of the crud out but it also turned the carb bodies dark gray. The carbs were not as clean as using carb dip either. Regarding carb spray, it's better than nothing but not as effective as the dip.

I have a gallon of some stuff called Berryman's Chem dip. Seems to work good.I havent dipped these yet but I will. These are definitely past the point of spray cleaning (in my opinion) Ill see if the guy will let me return the kit since I havent opened it. And then Ill get just the gasket and oring set. I'll keep you posted.
