    RESTORING A BEAUTY from the past!!!!! HELP all

    Hey everyone I'm Seth and have come in possession of a GS650E for a small price of $300 buckaroos.. It was in obvious need of large amounts of TLC though and so the journey begins as i undertake restoring this beauty of the past.
    This is my second bike, my first one being a 2002 R1 which was tragically stolen after about 5 months of ownership.

    I have as of yesterday got it running with a carb clean, sync, new igniter, fresh oil & filter, new plugs, and a new head gasket. It has almost 17,000 miles

    The Speedometer does NOT work and the gas gauge decides it likes to let me know how much fuel i have only sometimes..

    I know new chain and sprockets are def in order soonish, as well as FORKS REBUILD.. I have no clue how to go about that just yet, they are really bad and compress with almost no resistance.
    I also am going to replace the rear springs with much nicer ones, NEW tires are in order as well, New plug wires, New brake pads and fluid along with braided stainless lines.

    I am looking to make this baby ready for long rides and turning heads as I take the open road. No detail is too small to be overlooked for me so bring it on.

    If you have any suggestions, comments, advice, or just plain want to converse please leave a response and in the mean time i continue my search through old Q&A and whatever else i can dig up on the internet

    Welcome to the forum. Nice looking bike. You may want to consider adjusting your valves. New tires are always good if your planning on going on a long trip. Oil change, fresh plugs and plug wires.

        Thanks on the welcome and compliment of the bike. It will hopefully go from nice to amazing I have edited the info above because i forgot to mention i already did the plugs and oil.

          Replace the brake fluid, pads, and upgrade to braided stainless brake lines.

          BassCliff will be along with your mega-welcome. Go to his website and download a repair manual. He also has procedure for adjusting the valves.

              Welcome. I would add that going through your electrical system and disassembling and cleaning each and every connector and ground is a good idea.

                Howdy...nice bike...I like the color...

                Sounds like you know what you're doing...good job.
                And extra points for putting up pictures....

                  onchiman Welcome. I would add that going through your electrical system and disassembling and cleaning each and every connector and ground is a good idea.
                  +1 on the electrical. It is the first thing to do with a new (to you) GS IMHO. From your list it sounds like you are well on your way to a reliable bike. Did you replace the carb boots (both sides) and o-rings if your model has them? Basscliffs website has a ton on info worth checking out. Enjoy the bike.

                    Great colour - I did a 550 pretty similar a couple of years back. Pic below was taken as I couldn't decide on wheel colour - eventually went with both of them yellow.

                    79 GS1000S
                    79 GS1000S (another one)
                    80 GSX750
                    80 GS550
                    80 CB650 cafe racer
                    75 PC50 - the one with OHV and pedals...

                      Yes the Carbs need no more work at this particular moment until i get pods and rejet.

                      Thank you the color is pretty decent and i know some of what i'm doing along with being very hands on and obtaining help from great people such as yourselves

                      how do i go about cleaning them and with what. Is there anything i should be cautious about so as not to mess anything up?

                      P.S. MY CLUTCH CABLE Snapped on me today while on an afternoon ride :*(

                        Welcome! Genuine OEM Suzuki cable would be the best.....most aftermarket items don't last as long, by most accounts. It's as nice-looking as a cable can be, I guess.

                          lol i guess what i meant by nice looking is if i could get the protective casing in color... clutch cables dont exactly look nice..

                          but is that so that OEM cable would last longer than a newly designed one from another company like a racing clutch cable or something.. please correct me if theres no such thing..

                            At 35,000 km I'm still running the original 1982 clutch cable on my bike without any unusual maintenance procedures other than squirting some grease on it every year.....I'll probably change it soon, just to be on the safe side, but am more than happy with its longevity. I don't know about colour coordinated cables....I've seen SS braided brake lines offered to match the bike, but not cables.....maybe someone else here can help with that. The yellow bike looks pretty sharp, but I would just use black rather than yellow/red cables.....but then again I don't ride into Miami a lot, eh.

                            BTW, sorry to hear about the R-1....I hope karma works & the scumbag gets his!

                              Well thank you and im sure whoever stole it will get theirs but nothing i can do except try to prevent it more the next time i get one. It has inspired me to get the bike i have now anyways and i am having quite a bit of fun with it

                              I will see about getting an OEM cable and i must say i do like that its only $15
