I guess what i would like to know is should they be at the bottom and when you open the throtle they go up. what is a good starting point so i can sink them 2 at atime? and should #1 and $ be alittle more than 2and 3 on the vacuum gauge?

carb sinking ??
on my 78 gs550, i think i have vm carbs. the cylender that goes up and down, when you adjust them for syncing, before i put them on the bike, there all in differant places. should they all be down at the bottom with just a ittle gap under them or should they be up higher. #1 is about 1/8th inch from bottom and #2 is about 1/2 and #3 is all down and #4 is just alittle up. i dont think its right.

You sure they slides are not sticking? Sound like something is wrong. Dont force ANYTHING when working on carbs. Did you swap slides with different carbs or left to right? Should slide up and down all the way freely. When that is sorted before you place on bike adjust the throttle so that ALL the slides are same height and use something like a plastic tube (for a guage) from a spray can (WD40/chain lube) to get heights the same. And dont forget to wind the throttle back down so it wont rev when started
