oil leak - left crankcase cover
I have an 82 Gs650GL. It has a very small oil leak/seepage on the bottom of the left crankcase cover. It was doing this last summer and periodically i would wipe excess oil away. It has never gotten bad enough to actually drip on the ground, just leaves some unsightly deposits on the cover. I just replaced the stator and installed a new gasket. I thought this would have solved the problem, but it hasnt. Im not sure if this is a common problem or not, any help would be appreciated.Tags: None

There is a hole tight next to the bottom of the stator cover that drains the starter cavity. I'd check the o-ring on the starter nose, cam chain tensioner, or valve cover gasket.
Could even be (gasp) the head gasket.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

My 850 had a leak at the bottom of the stator cover and the source turned out to be oil running down one of the crankcase bolts. Pulled out the bolt, put a copper washer on the head and torqued it down. Problem solved.
Not saying your bike has the same issue but maybe. Clean the engine really well and then watch close when you start it up.Ed

Hmm, instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd post it here. Sorry if its too much a derail.
The clutch cover on my bike is leaking, right of the electronic ignition cover. All the bolts are tight - probably just the gasket?
