    I need GS Readers opinions L model vs E model GS's

    I have a 1978 GS1000 that runs like a raped ape, but I just dumped it on a gravel road, and cracked the vetter fairing bent the handle bars, various scrapes and scratches blah blah blah. I also have a 1979 GS750E with top end engine problems and I recently aquired a 1981 GS750L with bottom end engine problems. All bikes are stock, except for the pipes and the fairing on the 1000.

    Since the 750 engines can't be combined because of a 1980 redesign, would you suggest putting the 1000 engine in the 750L frame (if possible) or sould I just fix the damage to 1000 (I know this would be the easiest thing to do).

    I've never ridden the L model. It's always been my "dream" bike, but I've never had the opportunity to own one that runs. Which model is more comfortable for town riding, long freeway rides, and twisty country road rides. I love the way my 1979 GS750E rode and handled, and the 1000 wasn't bad, but I like the looks of the L model much better.

    I respect the GS Readers and would really value your opinions.

    Put the 1000 in the 79E ride it that way until you can fix one of the 750's engines Or take parts from the 79E and fix the 1000. I believe the E model would be more comfortable for long distances, I'm sure some of the others may disagree about the L model comfort

      Personal preference on the comfort thing, but I have found on that style of bike that the road shocks go more directly up your back...

        If at all possible, try finding an "L" version that you can test ride. Everybody is different in their personal preferences. I have had the "L" model for over 3 years, and just recently acquired a standard model GS. I'd have to say that I prefer the "L" model over the standard any day. I find it more comfortable and it seems to handle somewhat better too. But this may also be due to the fact that I've become very accustomed to the "L" version over the past 3 years. It does have 1 disadvantage though, having a smaller fuel tank.....so your range is cut a little.

        Possibly, had I ridden a standard for years before getting on an "L" version, I might say the standard has a more comfortable riding position. That's why I recommend you try and find an "L" somewhere, put a few miles on it and see, in your own opinion, which model you feel more comfortable/at ease on.

          The E models were the "sport" models in their day. The L models were the "cruiser" bikes. The bike magazines of the day loved the handling of the "E" models. They were the basis for the awesome Suzuki superbikes of the day.

          The "L" models got little respect from the magazines other than for their engines.

          As others have said, it comes down to personal preference and "the best you know is the best you have ridden." There are a lot of Harley riders proving that style is more important than function

            I think it is a totally personal decision. I love my L because it does look more like a crusier. Also, the small gas tank comes in handy when riding with my husband because I am assured that it isn't too long before I get a bathroom break in.
