    GS850GL Master Cylinder ID Help

Hey guys, I have a 1980 GS850GL with a busted front brake master cylinder. I'm trying to figure out which one to order, as all the parts sites list two. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

    Available parts are:

    SKU: 59600-45810
PISTON & CUP SET MODEL T

    and

    SKU: 59600-45811
PISTON & CUP SET MODEL X

I'm hoping these photos might help:

    Lettering says GS850-125674

    Greetings and Salutations!!

    Hi Mr. itsnotpoisoned,

The Suzuki part# you want (piston-cup set) is 59600-45810, which has been superseded by 59600-45811. See this resource:

    http://www.alpha-sports.com/spst/1980%20GS850GL/21.htm

The "T" is the designation for the 1980 model year. The "X" is the designation for the 1981 model year. Other designations can be found in Model Information linked on the homepage of GSR.

If I may, I'll give you the unofficial "mega-welcome". Pay particular attention to the "Top 10 Common Issues", the Carb Rebuild Series, and the Stator Papers. There are plenty of tutorials on my site and I have links to those on Mr. bwringer's site and Mr. Matchless' site. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

Lynn, was it different for the "L" models? The round ones show up in the parts fiches for the '80-'81 "L" models. Mine is square, but I don't have an "L" model.

Hum I thought I edited my post for the L....Could be the L 's all used the round master because of the angle of the bars

The L's use the round reservoir. You may want to get another master cylinder entirely. At some point, my bike was dropped and the MC had a very similar impact mark on the body of the MC. Eventhough I replaced the reservoir with a new one, the body leaked at the impact point. The part is not hard to find, I think I paid about $25 for a replacement MC. It is a good idea to rebuilt the MC anyway or at least take it apart and clean it.

OK, new issue. I got the new reservoir for the replacement. However, the parts are not exact, and I'm thinking I got the wrong part, even though I ordered it specifically for the '80 850GL off of bikebandit.com.

The main issue is that the new reservoir has a plastic "Y" through the center hole in the bottom, where the screw is supposed to go. Do I just drill through that? It fits perfectly into the cylinder cup and the cap screws on tight. Not sure what is going on here. Maybe its not an '80? Is there any way to tell the specifics of the bike from the VIN?

Sorry I'm pretty new to this bike stuff.

i think you have the wrong reservoir. Your new one looks just like the one on my 81 750L.

I wouldn't drill through the new one - maybe you need one for a 79?

Perhaps the one you're replacing was changed out with an older model ??

Hopefully someone here will recognize the broken one & id the year.
