Carb leaking gas when bike is off.

I have a 1981 gs 650glx. When I let it run and try to give it gas it bogs down. It Idles pretty good. When I shut it off the second carb leaks alot of gas where it goes into the air filter. Any Ideas. Thanks Craig

Petcock is leaking and so are the float needles. Time to clean the carbs and get an o-ring kit from duanage (here on the fourm...search)

Also a new petcock will be one of your best friends. After the clean carbs and NEW petcock...change the oil and filter and have fun.

Sounds like you petcock might be leaking gas into the #2 carb via the vacume hose. Pull the small hose from the petcock to see if it leaking gas if it is you petcock is bad and letting gas flow. You can cap both ends of the hose at the carb and petcock for now till you replace your petcock and run it on "PRI" to see if that fixes your problem.

You guys are awesome!! I did find that the o ring for the petcock was cracked. Will that make it bog down when you get on the throttle some?

When I got the bike the previous owner had taken the air box out of it and put on 4 of those chrome air filters and I was wondering if that might make it run crappy. Here is a dumb question. What does PRI stand for? How do I find the o rings for the carbs? Thanks Craig

Yes, pod filters will cause your bike to run like crap unless the carbs are rejetted. Pri stands for Prime. Gas will flow all the time in this position; only use it when your bike has sat for a long time and the float bowls are dry - and then only turn it to Pri for a short while and then set to Run or Res.

cycleorings.com has the carb O-ring kits.

Last thing, and not trying to scold, but all this very basic info is in the archives. A simple search will turn up all these answers very easily since they are very common questions.

I would check for gas in the oil as well if it is a OEM vacuum petcock.

O-ring being cracked is not a good sign the other elastomers are sound.

An OEM rebuild kit might work, but a new OEM petcock is prefered, I would think.

Edit: Oil in the gas, lol, :banghead: meant to type "gas in the oil"....
