    Tach whined and died...

Last night I took the GS550L on the road for a few hours, my first extended ride. Everything seemed fine for the most part, except on the way home, the last few miles. I started hearing a high-pitched whine in tune with the engine RPMs. I was worried about the engine at first, but then noticed that the tachometer was bouncing around alot, not in time with the engine RPMs that i could hear/feel. Then on the last 100' or so pulling in to my neighborhood, the tach died completely.

Any ideas what that could be? Granted, I haven't even looked much at it yet, just parked it. I'll probably get a chance to look at it more this week, but am hoping the mechanical gods here would know.

Have had similar happen on a GSXR tach. I think there is a nylon gear that goes out. I just replaced my tach.

The whining is the tach needing lubed, not sure what broke to fail it completely.
        Hopefully just the cable.

I have stuck a electric drill bit into the end of the tach to see if it still works.

          + one on the cable
