    I need help!! Leaking gas

Hello all And THANKS in advance!
I have a 1982 GS650L and inthe fall of last year, I broke the clutch ( The ball fell of at the handle) so my brother replaced it over the winter, after he did that He started it and saw gas leaking, He assumed it was the petcock so I bought a rebuild kit and did that, Upon taking the petcock apart we found on of the Metal pieces had broke off. so we fixed it. Upon starting it, it still leaked gas BUT only while running, it stops leaking when off! He thinks it might be from the No. 2 carb BUT we dont know where to start or what to try!

I hope thats enough info !

    Thanks again!

The petcock is vaccum operated. Its leaking because the diaphram from your "rebuild kit" as they often are, is CRAP. Very FEW of us have ever had success rebuilding a petcock. We simply buy a new one from www.Z1Enterprises.com or your favorite source for Zook parts, and move on. The reason it leaks when the bike is running is because the running motor is the source of the vaccum to cause the petcock to flow. Take that junk sucker off and buy a new one my friend, and never worry bout it again. Welcome to The GSR!!!

Just do it! For much less than an OEM petcock you can be back in business!

I agree with Josh. The metal disc on the back on my diphragm broke into pieces about 2 months after I bought mine. I just replaced the whole petcock and didnt even try to rebuild. Havent had no problems since ( at least with my petcock anyways)

I agree with the CafeKid. Those rebuild kits don't seem to work well. Just by a new one.
I had a kind of similar problem with my 1982 GS650GL. I would turn the peatcock to on and it leaked gas out of the vent tube. I thought it was the peatcock but it turned out one of my floats was stuck. Your situation sounds different since it stops leaking when the bike is running. Try the new peatcock and see if that helps. Let us know.

I bought the rebuilt kit from carb Kit capital.com after reading some rave reviews on here about them! Just to be clear, I need to buy a complete petcock to replace it with!

I am motorcycle illiterate so not sure what one I need here>.> > >

This should be the one you need. Just ordered one myself late Thursday night - should be here today (NY->VA).

Sounds like the petcock is working like it should to me. The OP didn't say the leak was coming from the petcock, he said from around the #2 carb, and he said it only leaks when the bike is running. The vacuum is working like it should. I'd say the problem is more likely an o-ring, or possibly a float problem.

Of course maybe I misread the post.

If the petcock diaphragm is leaking, it can allow gas down the vacuum line which leads to carb #2. That plus an already problematic petcock and the high rate of failures in rebuilding petcocks led to that advice. Could check to see if there's gas in the line after running it though. He certainly could also have a float problem on #2.
