Starter Gear

I drove my bike today. Ran great but it makes some gear rattling noise on the left side down where the starter is.It does this when it is on its kick stand or leaning to the left.It makes the RPM'S jump when it does that. I took it apart last summer and it looks like the gear that connects the main gear and starter gear together is lose.Any help would be great thanks.

Most likely the starter clutch. Common problem area on the big bore bikes. You have to pull the stator cover, pull the rotor (a rotor puller is recommended but there are work arounds), and then pull off the starter clutch and inspect the rollers, springs, and plungers. Hard to describe but pretty simple once you get that far.

Update: i found out what it was but need to know what goes there.i have a pic included. The middle gear spins the starter and the big gear is what is loose.all i got is one washer on that pin that goes into the gear and the stator cover what else i am missing?thanks everyone for your help.

The starter idler gear should have a washer on both sides of the gear

okay thanks.i just wonder if its suppose to be that sloppy the gear doesnt seem to be a tight fight.My dad just wanted to add a bigger washer instead to make sure the gear is tight but he was worried it would spin and grind down the cover?

The shaft for the idler gear is supported by the stator cover. With the cover off the gear may seem loose or sloppy but that should go away when the cover is reinstalled. Also, as Lynn stated, there should be a thin washer on each side of the gear.

The starter clutch is that thin gear that the idler engages with. If you remove the idler by pulling out the shaft, you should be able to spin that large gear in one direction easily, but it shouldn't go in the other direction. If it doesn't spin smoothly, the starter clutch is damaged in some way. You might want to try this while the bike is leaning to the left since you commented before about noise when leaning to the left (put a catch pan for the oil down first).
