Hey Dave,
I have had no problem setting the float heights on my 450 using just a small 6" ruler. You have to measure with the gasket off and with the valve needle spring uncompressed. That's the tricky part. You want the float just resting on the needle but without compressing it. Although, I guess you could just let it rest and subtract the travel of the spring from the float height.

Hi,
Keep at it. If you've been following all the advice you've been given, I'm sure you are very close. Have a look here to see if this helps:
Carb Specs-Float Height-Jetting
Thank you for your indulgence,

i have looked at the page. i have brass floats. because i put '81 carbs on my '83 bike. same jets, same size carbs. just tried to set the float height again. waiting for batt to recharge. if this doesen't work... i am going to buy '83 carbs again. it's easier to find help and to get parts. your right i am very close. sometimes it will run but very low rpms then sometimes it will race. have checked everything dozens of times don't see anything sticking. getting fed up!

This is a shot in the dark, but it was happening with my bike a while back: the petcock went bad and was sending fuel down the vacuum line. It was making the mixture way over-rich and the bike had no power and could barely rev at all. Check your vacuum line for any fuel...
I just rebuilt my carbs and installed them this weekend. As far as adjustments, I left the mixture screws at 1 turn out, each. I made sure the floats were in spec. Made sure the diaphragms were not damaged and that they would hold their position with vacuum applied for at least 15 seconds. Bench sync'd the carbs before installation. Checked the boots and o-rings for damage. Once installed, I followed the carb balancing instructions. While I was performing the balancing, I did notice some of the symptoms you mentioned (racing, or low idle). But once I got it dialed in it was fine.
Keep sanding.

Haha. That's funny. I just realized I don't even ride my bikes anymore. All I do is fix them. Somehow I find that more satisfying than the ride that I'll probably never take
Do you still want me to send those o-rings for the T-joint?
