Bad coils
Wow, I think I found my sputtering wows. I measured the secondary of both coils, they read 36k and 49k ohms respectively. According to the manual, I should read no more than 17k ohms. So my question is, where do I get the coils, and do the plug wires come with the coils???Tags: None

Stock coils should be pretty easy to find. Many folks here have upgraded to Dyna coils or other aftermarket replacements. Which means there are old coils cluttering up shelves all over the country. Heck, I probably have a set in the garage now that I think about it. I can look for you.
Best thing is to post up in the classified section. More exposure there.

Coils
My PO had installed accel coils and I like them. I have another set of Dynas for my GSXR, but if I was gonna buy new I would go this way.
It is tight but with those little coil holders they fit into the stock locations. Apparently the Dynas are a PITA to install.Last edited by posplayr; 05-31-2009, 12:30 AM.

Go with the green Dyna 3 ohm coils and the 8mm coil wires. Contact Z1 and you won't be disappointed.
Good luck.

Tom,
Chef had problems getting his Dyna coils to fit in the stock locations on the 80 GS1100L. I was surprised as so many people apparently use them. I have not seen the install, just going by what he said. Even the Accel coils are tight, but it is mainly getting the screws brackets to fit not the so much the physical size of the coils.

If you still have points and condenser, if your budget allows, you might want to think about a Dyna S electronic ignition. Bulletproof, easy install, set-and-forget. Points for these bikes are getting a little expensive, so a one-time expense for the Dyna is balanced out a little by not repeatedly buying points, along with not having to worry about pitting, change in dwell, etc.1979 GS 1000

I don't know. I thought your ignition system used the 3 ohm, which is very common across the 1000cc engines. I also think you should swap out the old points system with a Dyna S. That paired with the Dyna coils and you've not only updated your system but you now have a much more solid ignition.
Good luck.

I ordered a set of 4 ohm coils from Z1. Jeff told me that these coils will work with the Dyna electronic ignition. I think that I am going to order this as well, so I can forget about replacing points. At first I thought, how nostalgic, but soon realized how used I have gotten to no hassel electronic ignition systems over the years. I am old enough to remember when I had to replace them on autos. Forget about the nostalgia.

I was in Autozone yesterday and they had a picture of those coils packs that they put on cars these days (1 lead per cylinder). It got me thinking whether this might be a solution for the GS. Has anyone heard of this being tried? I would assume that if they have the same resistance, they should work. I would think a coil pack from a new four-cylinder Ford would cost less than a new, green Dyna coil set. It would also be pretty easy to come by.
