    I know this is old and minor, but here is the update;

    The culprit was a slightly loose ground terminal cable crimp at the battery.

    That was it

      There ya go! Thanks for the update.

      While your in there, check and clean every electrical connection and ground on the entire wiring harness, including the fusebox and ignition switch. You'll be glad you did.

        Thank you. You're right, BassCliff (& others) I'm sure

        But in the case of this particular gremlin, it was hard to find, because the battery ground cable was new, the battery was new - both from the shop less than a month ago. The crimp on the cable looked good, the connection was tight, there was no sign of corrosion............... it was just luck that with 2 people, me crouched down by that side of the bike when someone else hit the starter button, that's where the electrical fry sound was coming from ........
