    80' GS550E won't stay running.

I Have a 1980 GS550E, New plugs, carbs cleaned, have spark in all cylinders, new gas, good compression. It is missing the air box bracket that holds the air filter, but not the box itself. Do I have to have that in? If I spray starting fluid in the air box it will start and stay running only if I hold the choke open. Any help will help.

    when...?

were the valves adjusted last? Is this a new problem? How many miles on the clock....

No valves were not touch yet and the bike has 9000 miles. I received the bike for free and don't know any history of it.

You will need to get the filter installed before the bike will run properly. That said, it should light off and idle decently regardless.

When you cleaned the carbs what did you do? Did you tear down the carbs and soak all the parts or did you do a quicky job? Did you replace the intake boot O-rings?
