    broken middle piston ring

    Hi,

I was checking the ring gap tonight when I noticed the middle ring on piston #4 had a small piece broken off. As far as I can tell, the piece stayed in the groove and did not fall into the "Great Abyss". What could have caused this to break? There is no cylinder scarring and the piston groove is fine.

It sat too long/it broke when you pulled the cylinder off/it was broken during installation

Possibly winding out the engine really high while it is stone cold?

Are the ring grooves within spec?

How big is the broken piece?

The piece was maybe 3/8 of an inch long. the grooves all measured to spec.. Oh well, what's another 30 bucks. As they say, you can't take it with you, and your kids will just squander it anyway.
