I've not seen a OE MLS type gasket, just the Athena. The Athena head gasket is quite heavy so I assume it's steel although I didn't check.

Further on my leaking head gasket. Removed head hoping to find an obvious reason for the problem, no such luck! The head and cylinder surfaces were checked by the shop when they did the bore and supplied the gasket etc. The machine shop indicated that they will talk to wiseco and try to work something out on a replacement. Which I appreciate, but I am leery of using the same product again. Is there any agreement amongst the more experienced rebuilders as to what the most reliable way to go is? Before starting the rebuild the motor had 40k miles, stock gaskets ,never leaked. Someone on the forum said they used a stock 1150 gasket and trimmed to fit. What is involved in doing this?

Again appreciate any input , Thanks

Rapid Ray is the expert on that. He is currently trimming two head gaskets for me.

First of all, WISECO doesn't make gaskets! They only sell the ones they get from COMETIC! I have had problems getting Cometic multi layer gaskets to seal also. I put 2 coats of Gasgacinch on the head, the block & both sides of the gasket, letting each coat dry before re-coating. With this type of prep, I have NO leaks. Thanks for the reminder Jim, I forgot I still have your gaskets! Do you want them trimmed for an 1166 or a 1229? Or maybe, one of each?! Ray.

WELP, I installed my wiseco head gasket (made by cometic) on my rebuild with just a little sealer around the oil passage areas and no problems at all. Did a couple of retorques since I first fired it up.
BTW, I have an inaccurate torque wrench, so I made sure to give it more than enough.
