Front brakes
Towards the end of last summer I had tightened up all the spokes on my front wheel which took care of the shake I had up there. But after I did that it seems like the pads are rubbing on the brake rotor a little bit. Is it possible that my front rotor may be warped from riding when the front tire was wobbly cause of loose spokes? Where can I get a new rotor and brake pads from? This is on a 78 GS 550.Tags: None

Can't imaging how tweaking the spokes could upset your brake rotor unless you have some crazy uneven tension on some spokes which is distorting the hub (very unlikely).
For a rotor you are going to have to hit ebay. You should be able to find something pretty cheap but it's a gamble as to whether or not a used rotor is any better than the one you have. If you have access to a surface plate you could measure the runout on the rotor you have. The service manual details a check but in my experience it doesn't work. Only good way to check the rotor is to remove it and have it checked on a surface plate using a dial indicator. For brake pads, there are tons of places such as Z1 Enterprises. I have a nice rebuild caliper for the early 550's that comes with brake pads so let me know if you might be interested in going that way.Ed
To measure is to know.

Thanks for the tips I'll look into that. I was also thinking that maybe the rotor can be turned at a bike shop. The bike rides the best it everhas since I bought it except for the rubbing on the brake rotor so I would like to get it fixed asap. I am severly slacking on getting on the road this year cause of the bad economy but would like to get out within a couple of weeks if I can make enough $ at work.Have to get insurance and tabs yet.
