81 650gl clutch cable

Hi. My clutch cable broke, so I ordered a Parts Unlimited cable. I installed the cable and adjusted it and it engaged the motor but was stiff and did not have any play. I loosened it up and left it over night. The next day it did not engage the motor wether I tightened or loosened it. Wondering if any one knows the step by step for installing and adjusting a new clutch cable.

Did the cable come already lubed? If not, then maybe you should give lubing it a try.

It came lubed and worked fine but was a little hard to pull in, so I loosened it a bit and left in overnight. The next day I adjusted the tensioner on the handlebar and the lever and it won't engage the motor. The cable pulls the lever in, but the motor does not engage. Loosened and tightened but neither worked. Was wondering if I have to adjust the clutch?

There is no clutch adjustment. Well, toher than adjusting the clutch cable. SHould be adjusted so that there is just a little slack when let loose of lever, or another way to say it is so the lever only moves a very little bit before it takes up all the slack in cable.

There is the adjustment at the clutch hand lever, and the bigger adjustment where it treads in down near the lever on the engine case.

Manual sez: route the new cable next to the old one. Make sure all mountings are the same, and that the cable adjuster on the handlebar lever is screwed all the way in.

Attach the new cable end to the adjuster on the engine, and the other end to the cable-type adjuster on the handlebar lever.

Using the locknut on the engine adjuster, adjust the cable so that there is 2 to 3 mm of free play at the handlebar lever. Move the bars from side to side to make sure there is no point of binding, etc.

As time goes by, use the adjuster at the handlebar lever until it runs out. Then go back to the step above.

Thanks to everyone. It was just a matter of having enough tension adjusted from the clutch rod bolt. I'll quit being a slacker and order the Clymers.
