    Paper Gasket-Replace?

Ongoing remove, polish and replace engine covers. There's a paper gasket under the cover for the contact breaker. I've finished polishing the cover and am ready to replace it with stainless steel Allen head bolts. Is there any reason why I can't use silicone 'gasket in a tube' instead of that flimsy paper gasket? (Paper seems so '80's. )

Silicone bits like to break off and clog oil passages. Don't get that crap anywhere near your nice GS.

Several cheap and resourceful members here report good success with gaskets made from cereal boxes. Seriously. Most towns have an auto parts or hardware store that will sell you a nice roll of gasket material.

The point is, the "paper" gaskets work extremely well, and the space-age silicone is a Very Bad Idea.

Most would recommend not to use any of the silicone in a tube for anything......anywhere.

I made mine from some sheet gasket material.

Silicone on that cover is fine since it doesn't come in contact with oil. Keep silicone away from the engine covers that come in contact with oil though for risk of a chunk breaking loose and getting stuck in an oil passage.

Yeah, for that gasket you can use the store-brand cereal boxes

As usual, thanks for sharing that good information folks. Right now I have a stator cover to take off again so that I can scrape a silicone goop gasket off.
