What do you mean by "broken"? The advance mechanism is very robust unless you crashed the bike and hit the rotor.Ed

Yes, maximum advance is 32 deg BTDC and advance at idle is about 10 deg (if I remember correctly), so the bike should barely run at all with an inoperative advance unit.

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. H.D.T.

I agree with Earl, most likely something wrong with the springs. Pull off the advance and see what's wrong. Chances are you will be up and running pretty quickly.Ed

The rotor has notches that need to fit down over some tabs on the advance weights. If you lift up on the rotor and pull it out of the tabs, the springs on the weights move the weights inward and make it difficult to get the rotor back down. It's hard to describe but easy to figure out once you see it.Ed
