I gots a GS425 can i swap my coils out with different coils?
So ya, i got a 425 with a bad reg/rec (tested stator it was good). I believe i got a bad condenser maybe coil. It only has 12,000 miles. So my question is can i swap out newer coils for my old ones? I did the coil swap on my gs1100e with 90 katana coils and they are working supurbly. Is their something like that anybody has done for the old 400,425,or 450's? Thanks in advance.Tags: None

Points type ignition systems take coils with more resistance than electronic ignition type coils. You can change to something newer but will have to add a ballast resistor - older Chrysler cars have them so they are available for cheap from the auto parts store. Unless there is something wrong with your stock coils I doubt this is worth all the hassle. Suzuki used high quality ignition parts on our GS bikes which typically last the life of the bike although this is not a guarantee.
Good luck,Ed

Maybe just clean up all the electrical connections, might solve it to. My GS425 needed a new reg/rec 2 yrs ago, and most of the connections I cleaned up then. Haven't had any issues since. The coils are very good on these, and agree with Nessism's comments.

Coils
Thanks guys i appreciate the input. I went ahead and just ordered a new condenser and reg/rec. Man i can't wait to ride it. I bought it for 500 bucks and the entire bike is just cherry, except the tank which has a small dent. The odd thing is i have a modded out gs1100 with all the usual suspension stuff but i really want to ride this almost more than my bike.

Found the problem
So guess what it was the whole time it was 2 things actually the ground to the reg/rec was not a good ground from the factory so i rerouted it to go directly to the engine works perfectly now. Of course i did not find this out till after i shilled out a hundred bucks for a new reg/rec.....go figure. The othe rproblem i had it was occasionally running on one cylinder....I had a bad spark plug. But she runs beautifully now thanks guys.

Yup, the R/R grounding problem is one of the top problems on GS bikes. Tons of info about this in the archives if one chooses to use the search function to do some research before buying parts. BTW, you should run the ground directly to the neg side of the battery, not to the engine, at least that's conventional wisdom around here anyway.Ed

Glad to hear you got it running okay. Great bike and enjoy mine to bits. Very maintenance free. I've used a Metallic charcoal spray can paint to restore the mag wheels and it comes up nice if yours are faded like mine were.
