    No dampening in front shocks after fluid change!

    HI All...
    Sorry for the non suzuki post...but I know someone can help me out and i will never do it again...lol..promise.
    I changed out the front fork fluid on my other bike (gasp)..settle down..it is not my favorite bike as my gs is for obvious reasons..but it is a 1980 Honda CB750 F Super Sport.
    Took the bike for a test drive and there might as well been solid pieces of metal up there...no dampening at all!
    Will air in the shocks create this effect?? Thought i did it all right, but first time doing it so i am assuming i missed something. And yes, i put the right amount of fluid in...
    Hoping someone can provide me with a slap to the forehead and tell me what the heck is going on.
    Again, sorry not a gs , but there is noooooo other forum as good as this one.

    No damping or no movement at all? Like a hardtail? Hardnose?

      Nope...not a thing...ok, slight...but sure thought it was more...went over a set of train tracks at a slow speed and it damn near rattled my teeth out! Going out to look at it again...maybe the garage gremlins have fixed it.

        what is your sag measureing at? let out the air in the forks and see if that softens them up.

        For the record dampen slows the forks down from bounceing back super hard. You have no compression it sounds like. If you had no damping then your bike would feel like a pogo stick.

        First thing first is to make sure you have fork travel.

          Did you set the fluid height with the forks extended instead of compressed.

              Hi All...
              Thanks for the clarification on the dampening..it is indeed no compression.
              And Nessism...i put the correct amount of fluid in while the shocks were extended. That will make them feel like that?
              Should I drain the fluid and start over? I was thinking of taking the top cap of one at a time..try to compress the shocks...maybe getting all the air out?
              Like I mentioned...total newby to this situation..and didn't want to create a problem by doing what i thought was routine maintenance!
              By the way, the garage gremlins didn't fix it over nite. Went for a kick ass ride today on the GS and loved every minute of it as per usual.
              looking forward to your continued thoughts.

                What weight oil did you install? GS bikes came with oil pretty close to 15W. Regarding the oil height, if you remove the springs and compress the forks all the way, how high is the oil from the top. I'm not sure about the L model but the straight leg GS models need at least 5.5" of air above the oil.

                  According to the Suzuki service manuals you measure fork oil with the fork fully compressed. My guess is you added to much oil since you measured the level with the fork extended.

                  With all that extra oil you are hydolocking the fork.
