    cv to vm carbs?

alright everyone, heres where im at. i got a 1980 gs 750 with cv carbs that was chopped into a hardtail so the airbox wont fit anymore. this caused me to get a dynojet stage 3 kit to run pod filters and of course the last fuel screw that needed adjusting appreared to be crossthreaded and completely stuck. so now im looking for new carbs...

so basically on ebay they have some vm's for sale, is there any advantage or disadvantage to getting these? ive heard that they are much easier to tune in, would i still need the dynojet kit or can you just tune em to what you need without it? (for all i know the vm's wont even fit, i just figured the carbs for 2 750's would be the same) the bike also has straight pipes that my buddy welded on for me in his muffler shop if it makes a difference, i know bikes are real picky about that kinda stuff. thanks

The VM s won't work, they're physically smaller and won't fit the carb boots and head.

The 1980 GS 750 is a completely different bike than the earlier models.

Look for some CVs. Check the For Sale section
    1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
    1978 GS 1000 (parts)
    1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
    1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
    1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
    2007 DRz 400S
    1999 ATK 490ES
    1994 DR 350SES

Lots of GSR members have spare carb parts. Why not post in the Parts Wanted forum for a BS32 carb body? Make sure you list which exact carb you need and most likely someone here will help you out.

thats kinda what i thought. alright another question... what carb sets are interchangeable? i see some 650's and 850's and even some 1000's that all look the same as the ones i got but they all say double check before you buy. do these bikes all use the same carbs or are they bigger/smaller? it just so happens theres no 750 carbs and im trying to get this thing running stat.

The 550/650/750/850 all used the same BS32 carbs, but with different jetting.
If you decide to get a different used set I strongly suggest you plan to rebuild them before attempting to put them into service.

i have a dynojet stage 3 kit with the carbs i have now but the last step was to adjust the fuel screws on the top of the carb and for whatever reason its stuck as all hell, i used carb cleaner, penetrating oil, all that jazz and it was definitely gonna strip before it ever came out. but i have a rejet kit for it so it wouldnt be a problem

The center to center spacing may be different from your current carbs, but even if they are, you could use your old gang plates and carb interconnection tubes and linkages. Just don’t forget to order an O-ring kit from Robert Barr at cycleorings.com and go though them completely. The O-rings are sure to be hard and brittle.

alright, one more question. i found a set of carbs down south that im gonna go pick up but im scared to mess with the mixture screws, im really not trying to strip one out on a new set of $120.00 carbs and on my last ones which were in really good shape they were pretty much stuck. i used carb cleaner on my last ones but it didnt seem to work. any ideas on how to get those suckers 3 turns out if they seem to be stuck? ive heard you can use a torch and that might help but those screws arent very accessible, maybe torch the housing on the outside?

Yeah, heat can work to loosen them, but if you are going to actually pick up a set of carbs, before you put down your money, make sure the screws turn. If they don't turn, the set is not worth what they might be asking for them.

I'm confused. You need one carb body and now plan to pay $120 on some used carbs that may have stuck pilot screws? I don't get it.

well the carbs i got on it now are kinda sketchy, the #1 is completely screwed and then carb #3 is pretty much stuck too. its about 1/4 turn shy of where it needs to be and wont go any further. its probably close enough but it is definitley running a bit richer than the others. and i have a feeling its gonna take forever and cost more time and money finding the 2 bodies than it would to just pay the money and get legit ones that i know work right. theyre at a bike salvage yard so i got quite a big selection, i know i could make sure theyre not stuck before i get em. then i could just sell the extra 2 bodies to whoever needs em.
