Air box removal ('78 GS550)
I'd like to remove the air box from my 78 GS550 and install four K&N pod filters. Will I need to make any adjustments to the carbs for air flow or should it be fine as is?Tags: None

Welcome !!!
Don't forget to visit BikeCliff's site too.
Yes, you will need to re-jet the carbs due to the increased air flow. There is a search feature in the upper right corner. Use it and type in jetting, re-jetting or some such thing.

You have vm22 carbs so you won't be buying any dynojet kits. The CV carbs people say are a huge pain the rear but the VM carbs are much more friendly.
The only places I know of that you can buy the main jets for our vm22 is jetsrus and on ebay. If you do go this route please update because I would like to know how it goes for you.

Easy enough to dial the carbs in on a '78 - bigger mains, lift the needles and play with the fuel / air screws (no need for bigger pilot jets). Make sure that when you buy the pods you get the measurements correct - a lot of them foul the frame on the 550 (on nos 1 and 4) and won't fit.79 GS1000S
