Which newer (>83) engines will fit the GS 550 E frame?

Having asked here what other engines might fit the S 550 E frame someone (Gary) replied that newer engines (>83) might fit.

Can anyone elaborate on this?
Or tell me which of the newer ones definitily won't fit?

You might shoehorn an 83 and up 750 in there, as it was smaller than the 82 engine. the best way is to go to a boneyard and compare measurements with other engines....

Just another thought. You might look at an oil cooled 600 Katana engine, they do put out more power than the 550 and there are more hotrod parts available.

Excellent suggestion. That is the route I intended to take. the motors for the 600 bandit and katana models go for relatively cheap.
and like he said there is good aftermarket support also. I dont think it would be too hard. if you haven't read any of my past posts, I am planning a 92 GSXR750 swap into a 86 550ES, so if you dont do yours till this fall I will be posting about it then.
