    1150 exhaust issue -

    Slapped the carbs back on the 1150 yesterday, fresh from the rebuild, and she started up with the first touch of the starter. She's running really smoothly, but I noticed a lot of noise coming from the front of the engine. Turns out the #2 & 3 pipes aren't being held flush against the head. I can grab them and yank them out about an inch or two. When I that happens, the freakin' thing sounds like a Harley. Really sh*tty.

    Can't figure out what I did wrong, though. The collars are flush and the bolts are tight. Maybe the gaskets went in wrong?

    Anyone else experience this?

    Pull it off and see if there are any gaskets in there at all. Sometimes they fall out pretty easy.

      The trick with the exhaust gaskets is to squeeze them a little so they are oblong (not round) and grab the sides of the port. It may not be ideal from a sealing perspective ; but is much better than having them fall out.
      Chef showed me that.

        One other key is to snug down the header bolts before tightening the other attachment bolts. You need to get the header pipes down into the ports to contact the gaskets before snugging down the muffler anchors.

          Alternate tightening the header bolts a little at a time so they don't get jammed.
          1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
          1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

            It looks like the issue is that the collars for #'s 2 & 3 slip right past the flanges at the end of the header. So they aren't doing anything to hold the exhaust flush for those two pipes. Am I missing something?

              The parts fishe shows some extra "plate" parts on #2/3 (crescent shaped). Do you have these installed?

                If it's stock exhaust it sounds like you're missing the cresent shaped collets that hold the pipes in. Go to Alpha Sports, there listed under muffler as #5.

                  Taking the exhaust off, I see they are not there. I do have some, thankfully.

                    I guess you've been there before, but if the cresent shaped pieces are put in backwards, you will have the same problem. The flaired part goes toward the flange, & the straight part goes toward the gasket. Use masking tape to hold them in place while installing, tape will burn off at initial startup. Just my opinion

                      Nice trick. I've used a dab of grease before but I like that idea.
