Gs 650 g
So i am new to this forum. I own a 650G and it seems that I cant get it started dont know much about the history but it turns over fine. Weak spark on one coil and no spark on the other . I also have a 650 L it is an 80 and the G is an 81. Is there a way to check them my klymer only says to use a known good coil? There also seems to be a problem with the start switch. It was working then just quit. I was told that the starter solenoid was the problem but that was not the case. Any help would be nice.Tags: None

Check on Basscliff's site for the "coil relay mod". http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ You may have resistance in your wiring harness. Once you sort out voltage to the coils, if you still don't have good spark you can switch coils between bikes to check if that is the problem. The ignitors won't swap but the coils will.Ed

Start with cleaning the ignition switch, the fuses and holders, the run/kill switch, and connectors along the way. I used DeOxit from radio shack on all the connectors and switches so there is plenty of voltage at the coils. The 650 has 1/4" spade terminals on each coil, new connectors would be a good idea. Get the versions with full insulation over the connector.
A more rare problem is the coil pickups on the crank, right side of engine as you are sitting on it. They can go bad but not likely. The ignitor receives signals from this pair of small coils and fires the ignition coils mounted on top. There is a connector with a blue and green wire going to the ignitor, make sure it is cleaned out and connected well. I've seen this wire damaged by heat because it wraps from under the engine and if not protected it can be damaged. last, check the coil mounts since they are grounded on the frame and if loose or rusty the ignition coils are not going to work very well.
On each plug there is a cap which can be removed and replaced. New NGK caps are only 4 dollars each so I would replace them. Cut about 1/2 inch of coil wire off and thread the new caps in. Don't forget the rubber cap on the coil wire first.
That should get you started. BassCliff has color wire diagrams for the 650 I scanned, if you need a copy PM me and I can email it to you.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need
