well i am doing new sprockets on my 78 gs550e. my question is i pulled the cover off to get to the sprocket. now my wondering is. how exactly does the clutch work? i mean i see the rod going into the case but it just spins freely... i wish i could put pictures up but i dont have the time. the cable comes down and bolts into the cover when the cover is off there is no connection to the engine.. so then it slips onto the rod i just dont geti.. pleae explain!

On the sprocket cover that the cable goes through there is an actuator. It pushes the clutch rod through the motor and seperates the clutch fibers and steels. The actuator is probably not on the clutch rod right or is is jammed.
With the cover off pull the clutch cable and see how the piece in the cover moves in and out. There is also an adjustment on this.
