    Ignorant Ignitor Question

    Would a 1980 GS750 Ignitor match a 1985 GS550 ignitor in connection and use?

    #2

Its possible. Most of the ignitors for a gs550 will work on any other gs550 4 cylinder. But i doubt the plugs would be the same. But if you have them on hand, give it a shot and let us know!

        nope.
        83-86 gs550e/L ect...takes a one of one box(if you have 2 2bbl carbs..you have the odd bike.
theres alot of nice 550's of these years out there with no spark and the after market companies dont offer anything.
if someone was local i think i could modify an earlier model to work but it wouldnt be cheap.
beware of the ones on ebay..get a guarantee if you buy one.
        good luck.

No. TMK the 83 and on 550s will NOT work with a standard GS ignitor.

I would assume they will not
why are tou convinced the issue is from your igniiter it is only one of the severl variables implicated in your symptoms.?
just send me the 550 and work on the 750 mebbe?
that would be a win win for all concerned

              jk
but i think the spark advance would be differnet on the two engines
also i think your 750 uses breaker points not sure if that would be a stumbling block or not though.

did you do the test ont he ignter as indicated in the manul on basscliff's site that at least would give you an indication of hwether the unit was good in a cold state though any problem could be heat or connection related.

****ty, i was hoping that i would be able to do a straight swap, and avoid having to buy anything new to fix my problem.

wouldn't it be nice if the companies made things that fit cross platform. damn.

Well it simply doesnt matter WHAT 750 its off of. It WONT work. The siamese carbed bikes take thier own ignitor, and thats all there is to it. Too bad ya didnt catch me a couple of weeks ago, i had one i got off a wiring harness i got in an ebay parts bin, sold it for $40...

nah, i am not at all sure that its the ignitor, and i haven't had a chance to test anything, it is going to happen though, i was just hoping that maybe i could one for one swap and see if it made any difference, sometimes the easiest test is swaping a part out with one that works..

the 750 uses an electronic iginition, not points.
the 750 is in no way rideable so sending you my 550 is unfortunately (for you) not an option .

so you have run the test on the igniter? pg 169 of the oem service manual
I would adress the other equally likely culprits before dealing witht he agony of this super expensive part.

one of the 550 owners here put an aftermarket electronci ignition on
it buried on the forum somewhere

i would copy an paste it but the pdf file is not very user friendly and i have no accoutns on photbucket etc.

the 750 is a 79 model with electronic ignition?? odd....
                          oh also um
yeah trying parts is a nic eluxury but sometimes you can destroy a second good part by hooking iit up to a faulty wiring harness

no. The 77-79 750s were ALL points and condensor ignition. As were the 78 and 79 1000 and 79 750 and 76-79 550..etc etc etc Electronic Ignition did not happen on the GS untill 1980.

                              trigger plates dont go bad...
never ever ever seen one bad unless it was crashed.
these bikes are known for bad CDI boxes.
ive had several brought to me with no spark....finally stopped taking them in...no box/no fix.
these are some awesome running little 550's too...
