I'm Screwed ,
After a long Rehab , cardiac , the GS 1000 has been reassembled. A brother from an old club brought me some air mixture screws and orings. Things went so nice that the clutch hub cover came off to polish and check things inside.Upon pulling the cover off I found a # 8 X 3/4 PAN HEAD PHILIPS screw lying inside the cover.I have no idea where it came from, screws looked to be untouched and with only 9000 miles on her when purchased it is not too likely anyone has been in there.Anyone care to hazard a quess as to where this thing came from? and what needs to be inspected for other loose screws?Tags: None

is that one of the screws that holds the clutch springs on. Should be 6 total.1979 GS850G

Post a photo showing the type of phillips and length. Could have been droped during assemble way back when or could have come loose - pull the clutch basket and look at all the screws (there are several).Ed

I see what appears to be bolts , six total , sticking out through the clutch assy. Are there screws behind those? bike was rattleing at low idle and the hub appears to be loose judging by movement back and forth.I am researching removal procedures on this forum now.Loose screws inside moving parts just scare me.

Sounds like a standard cover screw. R U missing a cover screw or have they been replaced with allan head screws ? That would just suck if someone found humor in dropping a screw in the oil fill hole......82 1100 EZ (red)

Screw is not a machine thread but rather a self tapping metal screw . The ones with the sharp edge.Never thought of anyone just dropping one into the oil fill , i DID have a certain fellow who wanted to take it for a ride at our club meet ,if I thought he would do such a thing, wellllll .But back to business.I called the local supply house and told them I a 'big ass socket' and they insist on having a size. What size fits the clutch hub nut? Also I believe that the springs in the hub are loose as they make a sliding noise when the engine was turned over ot get to the locking tav, anyone try the shim method?

I've seen little kids do worse things trying to "help".
Personally, I'd have a look-see inside the oil pan to see if there's any more random hardware in there. If not, don't worry about it.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I guess if someone really wanted to be mean. You figure just about anyone could twist off the oil cap and drop something in. I guess its just one more thing to be paranoid about. lol

I was thinking about that today, someone taking the oil cap off and doing crap like that.1979 GS850G

YES,Iam paranoid now . I will pull the pan ,good suggestion. Never had this experience before , what type of people claim to be bikers anymore?Apparently someone was looking for a bargaining edge ,I will be more selective as to where the bike is parked while out and no more unsupervised rides!
