rectifier question,
I have a 1983 gs550e ,and 2 weeks ago I went out for a ride and when I was comi9ng back,I stopped at starbucks to get some water, when i got bvack on and tried to star the bike back up,nothing,I got the bike home and found that the battery was completely dead and had noacid in it,I put in a new battery and tested it and it was putting out from 13.25 volts at idle to 18.77 volts at 2500 rpm,so I did all of the testing that io read about on here and found that it was the rectifier,i bought a new one and put it on today,I started the bike and tested it with the tester and it was putting out 13.5 at idle to 14.27 at 2500 rpm,I notice that there was some smoke coming fro mthe plug that plugs into it and shut it off,i touched the rerctifier and it was hot enough to make me pull away quickly,I took the tank off and traced all of the wires and found none that were grounding out to cause it to get hot,I am wanting to know if anyone else has encountered this problem,or if they might know what else may be causing this problem, sorry for such a long post,Tags: None

Sounds like a bad ground. Did you run the R/R ground direct to the battery?Ed
To measure is to know.

OK I'll bite.
What type of Regulator did you replace the old with?
Does the R/R get real hot even at idle?
The voltages seem normal, but just to leave no stone unturned, make sure you wave love voltage drops across the R/R (+) to battery (+) and R/R (-) and Battery (-) at 4000 RPM.
I have had an R/R get hot a idle and it was poor connections on teh R/R (+) lead but I also had low voltages not 14.5 volts.
