    clutch hub cushion

My 1980 GS1000e has a fiber / plastic looking pin in the clutch hub that is bent . The picture in alpha sports calls it a cushion ,I believe. This is in a hole in a indentation that drives the oil pump gear. The gear has no hole for it to slide into. What purpose does this serve and should I search for a new one, straighten this one or leave it out.And yes, the clutch hub nut came off by hand after straightening the washer tab.Found my rattle ,and the screw wasnot beaten up so that mystery is ongoing, now to find a welder to do the spring update in the hub.

Uhhm that cushion is just that. Its there to reduce some of that chatter and shuffling noise. No, it doesnt drive your oil pump. Your pump gears are what drives your oil pump. The pump gears are driven by the clutch, which is driven by the crank..which is connected to the knee bone, the thigh bone is connected to the....Never mind.

BTW, simply welding that stock backing plate is a waste of time, effort and money.

That little cushion is only to dampen noise. it's a small rubber piece shaped like a mushroom, doesn't stick into anything except the back of the clutch hub.

Actually...it's just a cylindrical piece, the mushroom shape forms after the end gets smashed down.

Regarding the spring rattle, you can get heavy duty springs and a new back plate from sources like APE, or grind off the rivets and shim the existing springs. Check this link for more into. http://www.theflyingbanana.com/clutchhub.htm
