    Double disc brake conversion-new triple tree?

    I am adding a second front disc to my 78 gs 1000C. Will I need a wider triple tree and axle to accomodate this?

    Thanks to all the very generous and knowledgeable experts found here!

    The fork tubes are the same diameter at 37mm I believe so why would you?

      Thanks Dan. I was thinking the second disc layout is wider than the single, and might need a bit more width in the fork spacing. I am getting ready to rebuild the forks, and don't want too get stuck without the necessary parts.

        Did you swap for an 1000E fork and wheel or are you staying with spokes, Mac?

          The triple tree is okay, but you need some E model fork tubes to accept the second brake caliper

          The forks will bolt right into the trees

          Then you can add the brake caliper and brake hose

          Just pop off the plastic cover on the right side of the wheel hub and bolt on the disc

          Caveats

          If you're changing to the full Suzuki set up as it came "back in the day", You'll need two brake discs, as they are smaller. The wire wheel model front disc is larger than the E models

          If you're doing the twinpot upgrade, you'll need another wire wheel disc, the adapter plates and the Kawasaki calipers

              If you're going to do your 78 or one of your Gs, you need

              1. 2 larger brake discs
              2. Adapter set from Salty Monk
              3. Calipers from Ebay
              1978 GS 1000 (since new)
              1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
              1978 GS 1000 (parts)
              1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
              1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
              1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
              2007 DRz 400S
              1999 ATK 490ES

                Thanks for the information everyone.

                I am staying with the spoked original wheel. I have a set of forks to mount two calipers-the center axle kind.
                I have two of the larger size disks- I guess I will need to find the smaller ones. I have access to a 1980 850-I think those discs will work. I have two calipers for the center axle forks, and will add braided lines. For now I will use the master cylinder that came with the discs, with all the rubber in cylinder and calipers replaced. Am I missing anything?

                Once I have it functional, upgrading the calipers through SaltyMonk makes sense. I won't have time thi season though, because I want to ride the thing, not just work on it!

                  JUst hold on to those big discs, so many people are upgrading that they'll become scarce
