Fearthezuk, if you know the terminal that the black wire came off on the stock selinoid try and conect it to your new one with the same color wire if that was the case. also hold the stock selinoid to where it was mounted and you might be able to tell how and where the black wire was hooked up by a bend in the wire or how long or short it is.

The black and white wire should be a ground from one of the mounting bolts. Make sure there is a good ground from the mounting bolts to the battery. The little gree and yellow wire goes to the spade connector, which is one of the three connectors shown in your attachment.

Did you make sure the solenoid is grounded?

yes i did take the button apart and actually replaced all the parts in side(spring, contact, and buttong) and i cleaned the board) it is showing a power spike to the solenoid when i push the button. The starter will turn over when i arc the solenoid(screw driver to two large terminals)

Are there any other grounds i need to look at?????

i did the test with the tractor solenoid and the first one faild did the second one and could hear a very light click when i hit the start button. between now and monday night i am going to hook one of the original solenoids up and try the two test again... If i get the same results what ground wire would are you saying would be bad????

I'm not sure if you have this working or not, but solenoids require current to operate. Now, if you checked to make sure you have a voltage applied to the small terminal you have half the battle. Now, you need to complete the circuit so you have current - you need a ground. The case/tabs are ground on that solenoid and the plate you're probably mounting it to (if it's the stock mounting) isn't grounded. So, run a wire from the solenoid ground to the chassis ground and you should be in business.

when i say spike i mean when i hit the start button it increases. I dont think i am getting 12v from switch if i remember i had a 2v drop of from button to solenoid but i will have to retest that was like a week ago done so much since ive forgotten. I will look at the solenoids back when i get home from work i think i also want to try the factory solenoid with the test from yesterday much smaller and looks better... will let you know

ok made some progress. The solenoid is now functional. When i do test with wire from + to small terminal the starter begings to crank although its very slow crank but battery only reading 10v. I still get nothing out of my start button though...Any ideas

What's your voltage at the coils?

First guess is it sounds like a thorough cleaning of all electrical connectors is called for. A drop in voltage due to connection problems could have emulated a bad solenoid...

                                Automotive solenoid

A solenoid for a Ford is also a good choice. Sorry I don't have a part number. Ask the parts guy for a solenoid for a 1980 Mustang.
