Slotted brake discs-useable with round pad Caliper?

I am wondering if the older calipers with the round brake pads will work with newer slotted brake discs, used on the stock early 80s bikes which used the rectangular brake pads. The round pads will provide a bigger contact surface than the stock rectangular ones, and with the benefit of slotted double discs I am hoping to gain performance.

The calipers are from a gs1000 from 1978, and were originally with the solid double discs. The slotted discs I propose to use are from a 1981 gs550. Same diameter, and same bolt pattern, but slightly narrower. They bolt up fine to the 1978 gs1000c wire wheel.

The only thing I wonder about is the round pads on the slotted discs. Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks to everyone who has so generously answered my questions about this project.

no problems with the slotted rotors and the round calipers

I've had my single disc drilled for years
    1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
    1978 GS 1000 (parts)
    1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
    1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
    1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
    2007 DRz 400S
    1999 ATK 490ES

i don't see any problem in general if the discs are the same diameter and the spacing is ok.
but, are you sure that the round pads have a bigger surface area than the later rectangular ones?

I should have said wider, rather than bigger. I just compared the worn surface of the disc to an old brake pad. The round pad is about 1 mm wider than the working surface of the disc. So, I wonder if that will be a problem, or will cause interference as it wears in.

It is not correct but it will work with a slight overhang of the pad. The slotted rotor is slightly smaller. The square pads actually have more braking surface
