    another valve adjustment question

I have a 1982 GS850G. when checking clearances and pulling out shims to verify size, can I turn the motor over using a wrench with a shim out in order to do a swap with another cylinder? will every thing stay together or will the valve fall into the cylinder without a shim and the spring go flying? I am thinking not but want some assurance from you guys with the past experience.

    Thanx guys

No! do not turn the motor over without a shim in the bucket, the corners of the cam lobe will get scored by the edges of the bucket. Nothing will go flying there are bits and pieces under the bucket that hold the valves and springs together. But your cam lobe will get cut up. You just need to take time and pull each shim and write it down so you know what you have, maybe try to find one extra shim just to help you swap them out. More then likely the shims you have in the bike now won't be enought and will need to exchange or buy other ones. Are you part of the GS shim exchange?

Thanx first timer. I knew there was something that I was not thinking of. I didn't really think it would come apart figured there were some type of keeper or other part that held it together. Yeah I will have to get few extra shims that i know the size of and can't just trade with another cyclinder. And no I am not part of the shim exchange. I will have to check into that. Thanx Again.

Since you are in the process, I will once again give a shameless plug for my Excel spreadsheet. It will help you figure out what shims you need and will keep track of what you have in there from one adjustment interval to the next. It also provides a generic page to record any other maintenance you do to the bike.

To get your copy, send me an e-mail (click on my name for info), put something about valve adjust spreadsheet in the subject line and I will get you your own copy.
