GSXR tach to Gs wiring question.....

Hello guys, I have a question in regards to wiring this tach on my scoot.....I picked up a decent set of gixxer gauges, and got everything wired and working perfect (All the dummy lights etc).......The only thing left is the actual wires (3) from the tach......

    From GIXXER TACH

    1) black with red tracer
    2) Black/ orange
    3) black/white

I just dont want to screw anything up or toast anything......Im a little fuzzy on where these wires are to connect on my 1980 GS750, I know I have to get a signal off the coil, just not sure where to tap everything in. From what Im reading on here, Its better to have its own ground as well correct?

Again I appreciate all input and help.........I will post some pics when all is said and done............Catch ya later, Eric

      Here's a guess
      B/W ground
      B/R hot wire
B/O to the igniter wire that goes to one of the coils

if you go to Gixxer.com there are free manual downloads for oilers; you can check the schematics to figure it out.

Thanks POS for the heads up......and Chef your right, its better than guessing.....

Im downloading the wiring diagram as we speak.......But my next question is once I figure out what is what on the GSXR tach, I have to figure out what is what on the GS750 , so I can mate it up.....

Im thinking I have to skim over to Bikecliffs site and dig up some wiring diagrams ? So I can see what to tap into on my bike to make the tach work.........

Why cant I just wave a magic wand over this rig and "Poof" its done LOL

Which wiring diagram would one go by for an 1980 GS750L?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you should use the diagram marked as being for a U.S. 1980 GS750L? :-)
If you can't find that, then use a similar time-period 750/850/1000.

Going from memory, on the GS wiring you're going to want:
                        orange-with-white-tracer (+ ignition circuit)
black-with-yellow-tracer (coil signal, a switched ground)
                        black or black-with-white-tracer (ground)

I think it's _likely_ that the B/Y GS wire goes to the B/R GSXR wire and the O/W GS wire goes to B/O, and of course B/W to B/W, but I may be wrong. As I recall those tachs are fed a signal directly from the ignitor, not from the coil, but I don't know if that changes anything.

                          Richard,
I think your spot on......I wired it up as you have said, with the exception of the orange and white tracer wire. I just taped into the extra brown wire in the headlight bucket.....

Crossed my fingers and gave it a go, and all was good. The rpms seemed to be accurate...All the dummy lights work etc....

Looks pretty nice actually......Im waiting for the Cafe fairing to come in to hide the ugliness in the back of the gixxer gauges LOL ....

Only problem Im having now is the speedo isnt working.Im assuming it would have been off a bit, but its not working at all. I know the cable is good, as the stock speedo works flawless. So I have the assumption there is something funky going on in the gauge maybe???

                              FYI,
I know this doesn't help the wiring or speedo problem but my solution to the ugly back of guages problem on by 86 Gixxer 1100 with 91 Gixxer 1100 guages is a Ducatti headlamp fairing to fit the 8"train light from an ED,
