can a clutch seize by just sitting

My GS1100GL has been off the road since 2006. Today I tried to adjust the clutch cable. After going all the way through the adjustment range possible, I can't get the clutch to disengage. Nothing has changed on my bike. The Clutch always worked and was adjusted ok. How could time alone change my clutch. The engine always had oil in it. What could be the reason that my clutch won't disengage?

It will stick after sitting. However, you should be able to start it in neutral and smash it into gear to break it loose. Worst case you stall.

If that doesn't work after a few tries, you might consider pulling the clutch cover.

Plates are stuck together. You might consider trying to bump start the bike with the clutch pulled in to break it loose.

Yes.

Try this, its been about five years since I had to do it but I think this was the way.

Sit on the bike, wheels on the ground.

Pull in the clutch lever and rock the bike back and forth against the gears.

If you're lucky you'll break it free. I wasn't.

What worked for me was pulling the clutch cover off and removing the plates and discs, giving them a coat of oil and putting them back. I've been riding with that clutch ever since.

Someone else may have more specific info for you but I'd give the rocking a try.

if it runs, get a rolling start in neutral and slam on the rear brake to free it up.

So many ideas, if you ride around in first gear with the clutch pulled in, crack the throttle on and off for a little while, it will free up.

stuck clutch plates

Interesting question. I had the same situation happen to me on My 82 1100g
last week. Very odd I thought. After readjusting the clutch and having it stall
numerous times, I thought I would be venturing into a tear down and spring replacement. But thinking I only have 7000 miles on it, yet it is 27 yrs. old. I decided to put it up on the center stand and started it up. Dropped it in first
and went through the gears. Took it off the the center stand an it was fine.
I have 2 other bikes ( 750 and 850) and never had any problems. I wonder if this is common with this model? bmac
