    Shocks new vs old.

    First start with the assumption that money is a consideration and I am not able to afford a $2000 set of shocks.
    The shocks are for my 1000ET
    So here are the options
    I could buy
    New Midis which are around $200-$300, I weigh 115 kg / 250 pounds so the heavy springs wont be a problem.
    New Hagon or YSS @ around $600-$700, even this is stretching the dollar.
    2nd hand stockers in good condition @ around $50-$100
    2nd hand Honda CB900 items for $200
    2nd hand Konis which look ok but may need a rebuild for $250

    I guess my question is would the new Hagons or YSS be twice as good as the new Midis and would those new Midis be better than the 2nd hand Konis and CB900 stockers?
    I am assuming that any of those options would be better than the stock shocks.

    I'd get the used Koni's as long as they seem to be in good shape. Second choice are those Midi shocks.

      I recently bought some used Konis from a fellow. He had pulled them off his Beemer ten years ago when it was fairly new, and put Works Performance shocks on. He told me they had about 8,000 miles on them.

      Absolutely fantastic performance on my 1000G. I weigh about 205 lbs, and these came with #222 springs. They are set up perfectly for me. Even if I would have had to rebuild them, they would have been a bargain compared to how the original shocks were performing, and the damping adjustment on them makes them well worth the extra $100 or so (new) over standard Progressive rear shocks.

        That is exactly the sort of info I am looking for.
        Deep down I had already decided that I wanted Konis.
        Just wanted to make sure I was going to get good "bang for my bucks"

          I would think IKONs would be readily available, even used, that close to OZ.

            They are available new but they are pricey.
            Not too many come up for sale second hand here.
            To give you an idea I have been looking for shocks for the 1000 for the last 2 years and over that time I have seen three sets of konis. One set was poked and the others didn’t reach their reserve.

              Koni and Ikon (the new Koni) parts are interchangeable. They even have the same part numbers.

              If I were you, I'd check the springs on the Konis you're looking at. If they are labeled 222 or higher, they'll work fine for you. You have about 40 lbs on me, but I ride with my preload at the lightest setting, and the damping at 1 for solo highway riding. At setting 2 on damping and leaving it at the lightest preload, it's great for the twisties.

              For riding two-up (my wife weighs about 120-125 lbs), I put the preload on the second setting and damping on 3, and we're good to go.

                I have a set of Koni's for my G but I haven't fitted them yet. Was going to rebuild but took the spring off & it doesn't seem like they need it.

                No adjustable damping like the stockers. Figured it would be an interesting comparison when I get round to it!
