    1985 GS550 high speed issue ?

    85 gs550
the problem comes at 90-100mph it just dies completely. I switch it to prime and it's perfect till higher speeds. Also it's slow to come back to idle. Anyone have any ideas.
    Thanks Jesse

    Hi Mr. Jesse002100,

Why would you want to go that fast anyway?

I would first suspect carburetor or air intake issues. Are the carbs clean and properly configured, float height, jetting, synchronized, etc? Do you have new air intake boots and O-rings properly installed? How about the airbox-to-carb boots and the airbox itself? Is everything sealed properly? Are you using an inline fuel filter? These can be restrictive and cause fuel starvation. Did you install a new petcock? A bad petcock can be detrimental to fuel flow. How about your vacuum hose? Is it in good shape and properly connected?

OK, I'll shut up now. Keep us informed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

once again basscliff i always love you outright to the point answers. but im not sure as the float hight or settings but the airbox is sealed air filter is new and intake boots are very odd because of the carbs being the 2 into 4 carbs but they seem fine i am going to order some. when i went to our local drag strip the bike dies every pass at 90-100 mph. this is my brothers daily bike and we have looked everywhere for the carb specs, i have asked in the oem specs sticky thread and still havent got a reply? if anyone has the specs i would greatly appreciate it.
as for the petcock is there any way to test it ? it operates alright i guess till high speeds then it has to be switched to prime for a few seconds so it could be carbs or petcock? im not sure ?
      thanks Jesse

Mine did the same thing. At full throttle, it would run great for awhile, then start to blubber and strain and the revs would drop until the bike almost died, at which point it came back to life like nothing had happened.

Don't pull your hair out trying to "fix" it. At most, I'd put a higher flow fuel tap on it.

Have a look at the OEM carb thread again, I have just updated the speadsheet on the second last post maybe it covers yours now.

Since it tends to clear up when you switch to PRIME, try setting it there just before the run to see if it prevents it from happening. If it runs well on PRIME, I would suspect the petcock. With a long run at wide open throttle, you might be losing enough vacuum in the intake tract to allow the vacuum petcock to close.

thanks again the closest is the 83 gs550 in the carb specs im going to use that as a reference and i just bought a petcock rebuild so in a day or two ill tweak the carbs and rebuild the petcock.
              thanks again, Jesse

                Hi Mr. Jesse002100,

Thank you for your kind words.

Hmmm, I thought Mr. Griffin was going to post those specs from his manual. Has he done that yet?

Anyway, according to what I've noticed here in the forum, the petcock rebuild often fails. To improve your chances, be sure the surfaces are free from defects and irregularities before you put it back together.

yea when the new rebuild comes im going to clean it all up hopefully after the carbs are set appropriately which i believe they are and the petcock functions correctly a pass on the stip wont make me look bad when the bike dies
                  Thanks again
