swaping point for electronic iginition on an 850

    Hello

I am looking to replace the point ignition on my 79 GS850 with an electronic system and have come across someone local who is parting a 82 model of the same bike who has the parts.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't think that there are any differences in the engine between the years that will keep it from working, but I am wondering if pickup mounting plate will screw into the clutch cover and if the "rotor" part will bolt on to the end of the crankshaft like the cam and timing advance mechanism do on my 79. Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

First of all the electronic ignition system consists of two main parts: the ignitor (black box) and the signal generators, which replace the points. The coils are different as well - less primary resistance.

The '79 850 came with points obviously, then for '80 and '81 Suzuki installed the first generation electronic ignition system that uses a mechanical advance mechanism to control spark advance. For '82 Suzuki changed to an ignition system that does not use the mechanical advance - the spark advance is built into the ignitor.

To convert a '79 with '82 parts you would need the signal generators, rotor which replaces the mechanical advance, ignitor, coils and the harness section connecting everything together. It's doable but not worth the hassle when a Dyna S kit is $120 from Z1 Enterprises.

If you get all the parts, then yeah, it'll all fit to the engine just fine.

Running the wiring would be the hardest part.

Get the coils, too -- they're different on the points models.

The '82 GS850GL models had the mechanical advance, and the '82 GS850G models had electronic. I don't know why, exactly. Either way, they work fine.
